The metro area had a population of 2.74 million in 2003, up 1.4 percent, or 37,000 from nearly 2.7 million in 2000. The 2003 population places St. Louis just behind San Diego, which had 2.9 million residents, and just ahead of Baltimore, which had 2.6 million.
